Sports mouthguards
A mouthguard absorbs and spreads the force of a knock to the face, protecting teeth, lips and jaw. For any contact or collision sport — football, hockey, basketball, netball, martial arts, skateboarding — it is basic equipment, and it matters most for children and teenagers, whose front teeth are the ones most often damaged.
Ours are made from impressions of your teeth, in a wide range of colours and colour combinations.
Custom-fitted versus over-the-counter
Boil-and-bite guards from a chemist are better than nothing, but they are moulded roughly and tend to be bulky, loose and awkward to talk or breathe through — which is why they so often end up in a bag rather than a mouth. A custom guard is made to the shape of your teeth, so it stays put and is thin enough to be worn without much thought.
- Made from impressions or a digital scan of your teeth
- Stays in place without being clenched
- Even thickness where protection is actually needed
- Growing children need theirs remade periodically as teeth come through
Splints for grinding and clenching
Grinding and clenching, often during sleep, can wear teeth down, chip them, and leave you with jaw or facial soreness and headaches. An occlusal splint is a custom-made appliance worn at night that takes the load instead of your teeth. If we see wear patterns during an examination we will raise it with you.
Sleep apnoea appliances
For some people with snoring or mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, a custom oral appliance that holds the lower jaw slightly forward can help keep the airway open during sleep. Suitability depends on a medical diagnosis, so this is something we work through in conjunction with your doctor or sleep physician rather than assess on our own.
Caring for your guard
Rinse it after every use, clean it with a brush and cool water, and store it dry in its case rather than in a hot car or a sports bag in the sun. Bring it to your check-ups and we will look it over for wear and fit.
