What is a partial denture?
A partial denture is a removable appliance carrying one or more replacement teeth, held in place by the natural teeth around it. It fills the space left by missing teeth so you can chew and speak more comfortably, and so the remaining teeth are less likely to drift into the gap over time.
Who it suits
- People missing several teeth in one or both jaws
- Anyone wanting to restore chewing and appearance without surgery
- Patients for whom implants or a bridge are not suitable or not the preferred option
- As an interim solution while a longer-term plan is carried out
How yours is made
We take impressions or a digital scan of your mouth, record how your teeth meet, and select tooth shades that match your own. The denture is then made for you, and we fit and adjust it so it sits comfortably and your bite is even. Partials can be made in acrylic or with a cast metal framework, which is thinner and generally more rigid — we will talk through which suits your situation.
Living with a partial
New dentures take some getting used to, and it is normal for speech and eating to feel different for the first week or two. Come back for adjustments if anything rubs — that is expected, not a sign something has gone wrong. Clean the denture daily, leave it out overnight unless we advise otherwise, and keep up your regular check-ups so we can monitor the teeth supporting it.
Other options
Partial dentures are one way to replace missing teeth. Depending on your situation, a bridge or dental implants may also be worth considering, and if all the teeth in an arch are missing, full dentures or All-on-X implants come into the picture.
